Dear Mum and Dad,
Last Thursday we went on excursion to observe plants.
First we went to Port Kembla Beach. There were not many plants because of the salt and the sand. Then we got back on the bus.
Next we went to the steelworks. We sat on a hill and observed the plants. We saw bushes and grass. Not many plants grow because of the pollution.
We got back on the bus and went to Mt. Keira rainforest. We got off the bus and ate out little lunch in the clearing area. We saw many different types of plants and trees, tall trees, and rock plants.
After that we got back on the bus and went back to school. We arrived at school at 12 o’clock. Then we went into school and talked about our excursion.
We had great FUN!!!

The Spanish Armada

In May 1588 Spain was the most powerful country in the world. King Philip II of Spain was determined to conquer England and became its King. He ordered a large number of ships to be prepared to set sail and invade England.
At first Queen Elizabeth I ignored the rumors of a Spanish invasion, but soon she came to realize the great danger the country was in and she made sure that England would be prepared for a battle. Eventually the Spanish were ready and over 100 ships set sail towards the English Channel.
As soon as the Spanish ships were seen from the English coast, fire were lit on the hills as a signal that the invasion was coming. When the Spanish ships got close enough the English navy closed in and great sea battle began.
Once the battle began it was obvious to the Spanish that they would be defeated. Not only did the English sailors have stronger and more powerful ships, they also made terrifying use of fire ship-boats which were deliberately set ablaze and then sent amongst the Spanish fleet.
At last the battle was over. A few Spanish ships escaped and eventually reached home, and many were sunk and to this day some of their wrecks still lie on the seabed in the English channel.

Furious Pace in Hockey Finals

Spectators were treated to a feast of fast hockey on the weekend when the South Coast Women’s Hockey Association staged four grand finals at Kiama.
The highlight of the day was the Division One grand final between Gerringong and minor premiers Warilla which was a hard, fast game, with the speed of the young Gerringong team proving the difference on the day.
Warilla stormed the Gerringong circle from the start of the game but the Gerringong defense held out and then took the attack to Warilla’s 25 yard line through speedy centre forward Jenny Miller.
After a period of midfield play Warilla’s right inner Mandy Smith broke away but again met solid Gerringong defense.
Gerringong continued to move the ball quickly and just five minutes before half-time, Gerringong’s left wing Michelle Cooper finally latched on to the ball and put it between the posts after having narrowly missed connecting with a shot several minutes earlier.
